The department of electronic systems engineering (DESE) had its inception in 1974. It was conceived to primarily act as a bridge between academia and industry. Now after almost half a century, it continues to have a strong industry focus. The department faculty have strong industry interaction through consulting and open ended industry relevant research.<\/p>\n

The mission of the department is to train students to be able to take an idea from concept to commercial realization. For this to happen, there are several processes in between that the students need to learn. The department facilitates and trains the students in these processes and to achieve excellence. The curriculum of the department lays much emphasis on pedagogic cognitive levels related to \u201csynthesis\u201d. Synthesis is fundamental to engineering good electronic products. There is a master programme offering M Tech in electronic design which provides an intense treatment of all aspects of design of an electronic product. It lays emphasis on electronic and mechatronic aspects of product development.\u00a0 There is another master programme that is jointly offered by ECE in the area of microelectronics and VLSI. Both these programmes complement each other very well. The M Tech in microelectronics and VLSI trains the students to achieve excellence in designing systems on chip, whereas the M Tech in electronics design strives to train students to achieve excellence in designing systems outside the chip and by using the chips. We have a strong research programme which integrates well with the above two masters programmes.<\/p>\n

Given the present global scenario, and the encouragement of GoI towards self-reliance, entrepreneurship is probably the best way forward to secure country\u2019s and one\u2019s futures. The department will be a willing facilitator for this to happen. There are no doubt several challenges that the world and the country need to address. From the electronic design perspective, one should look out for the three majors, viz. (i) products related to quantum computing will have significant societal impact couple of decades down the line, (ii) eco-system related to e-mobility will see a global sea change within the coming decade and (iii) products related to clean energy will begin to make significant impact with immediate effect. The department will do everything to hand-hold students to become self-reliant entrepreneurs of the country.<\/p>\n
